Being an unconventional woman in Nigeria is no easy task, and so when we see women braving the odds and doing the unconventional, we celebrate them.
Meet Sandra Aguebor, popularly known as ‘Lady Mechanic’.
She has been an auto mechanic for the past 32 years and has run her own garage for 22 years. She started training to be a mechanic at the age of 14.
She is the founder of the Lady Mechanic Initiative, and she trains women to be mechanics for free.
She has empowered hundreds of women including former sex workers, orphans, and victims of trafficking.
She launched her NGO in 2004, and since then over a thousand young women have graduated from the Lady Mechanic Initiative programme across five states in Nigeria.
According to Sandra,
For me to become the first female Nigerian mechanic, I had to work five times harder than men to prove myself. Now, many people don’t know my name, it’s ‘Lady Mechanic’ everywhere I go.
